engine tear down

hey guys had to tear down my engine due to what I believe is a blown head gasket, basically i got it down to the heads and decided to remove the whole engine and leave the tranny bolted to it. Is there any how to's on removing an engine? I have never done so, but have my own garage now, so I can work at my own pace. I have an engine hoist and engine stand to use. I know i need to undo the motor mounts, and unbolt my headers. Also remove the tranny crossmember. what else neesds to be done? any help would be appreciated. I also took the hood off and removed the shifter. Plan to check bottom half of engine as I not sure if blown head gasket is the problem for sure. power wash engine and paint the block. take to a shop have them examine. new gaskets all around.

My suggestion is to tag everything you dont know about. Things like mass air harness's, 02 harness's and injector harness's. The worse thing you could do is hack a car up by putting it back together half a$$ed. Not saying you will, im just saying. I have pulled a number of mustangs to my garage, and when i would get down and dirty and start pulling things apart, i would be stumped on how people could even hook up something so F"d up.

What i used to do a long time ago was took a marker to everything i unhooked. Or tagged it. That way when i put everything back together, i had an excel sheet/pencil and paper with a mini description of what went where. Until i learned it, thats what i did. Been a long time but it will help.

Also, its best to have a camera and be familiar with photobucket or whatever. That way if you get stumped on something you dont understand.. take a pic of it and post it that way people can tell you. Its much better than the guessing game P

i started off on the wrong foot, i tore just to tear, didnt break anythign just didnt label. i know i will regret later. i have never worked on an engine be4 and it was finally time. I have another vehicle to drive so time is not really a problem. I just want to make sure its done right. I was going to pull engine and tranny but after reading several forums i dont think I will be able to since my jack stands do not go up that high. I want to make sure when I'm done I wont have to do anythign with the engine 4 a long time.

Buy a haynes manual from your local parts store. Course they are very vague in that manual if you ask me, but its a good step in the right direction. At least it has its fair share of pictures.

Just wish their schematics didnt require you to use a magnifying glass! LOL
