This weather is awful....

It is 4:14 am and my furnace just died...called the heating service and it looks like at least 24 hours until they can come. Any suggestions about keeping a house from freezing?

My Cobra is tucked in but can't wait to be started up again in the Spring...

I guess this weather has its benefits...taking my son snowboarding on Saturday.

Stay warm everyone..

It could be anything. If it's newer, it could be a bad igniter, fresh air sensor, loose wire (give the stat wire a jiggle to see if it helps). Maybe a bad conection at the stat?

Older furnaces are a piece of cake to work on. Not much can go wrong with them.

Jason

Hope your warm.

if its a 90% eff furnace (forced air) the intake or exhaust outside could be plugged. Mine has a reset switch on the side of the box that covers the the burner assy. Its kind of hard to see, and reach, but there should be one somewhere if its a new one. I had to go outside at 5:15 and stand in waist deep drifts to clear mine because my heat was out too.

No flash due to the snow coming down, also a crappy camera.

Usually on an older, or newer cheaper, furnace the thermocouple is what goes bad. Just go to a drugstore, Home Depot, or Walmart and buy one. I think they are about $10 or less.

If you don't know what that is it is the copper thing that is in the path of the pilot light. It lets the furnace know the pilot light is still on. If it doesn't detect a flame, accurately or not, it will shut off the gas so that the house doesn't fill up with gas. It is VERY easy to replace. Just look how your current one is routed and replace it with a new one. These also have a tendency to go at about 3 in the morning. Let me know if you need anymore info about it.

If you have a newer furnace (not from the 1980's) see if there is a "sight window" in one of the panels to be able to see a flashing LED. Look all around through the sight window for it. If you see it flashing count how many times it flashes. Then open the panel and look at the codes on the inside of the panel to see what the problem is. It might flash even with the panel open, I'm not sure.

It isn't that bad, looks like the people who can't drive in snow stayed home today, no accidents on 77 either way, most impressive.

It was kind of fun driving home in all of this last night with the Ranger. I was taking 4 foot snow drifts like they were nothing.

Didn't even slide once going, turning, or stopping, thanks to 4wd and braking well before I needed to stop.

My first time driving home with 4wd in the snow too. The last 5 years I did it in the Mustang with an open diff.

The extra drive wheels changed a sphincter clenching adventure into a tedious chore. Yay beater!

Haha I got lucky and just decided to take my dad's Ranger to work rather than my Mustang. Lucky guess for me, I wouldn't have gotten out of hte lot with the 04...

Makes me wonder if I should trade it in on a small 4x4 truck this spring.. :(

times like this make me happy that I got 4x4 on my truck....sure, the gas mileage sucks being my everyday vehicle but I don't get stuck and I pulled out a couple of people today and made some quick ca$h..cha-ching...always carry chain and a tow strap in the truck....

From this morning:

Yes, I made two tracks to help get a car down the street. Ended up taking the Jeep to work (RWD, 5 spd) and it was a blast. They did not plow until late this afternoon, however, it was a sympathy plow.

Cleared the bottom half, moved the cars, cleared the top half. Worked on some sidewalks and the neighbors' driveways, and finally went out to the street to make the tracks.

Dad came over today and cleared a lot of the street.

I am thinking about speaking with some of the other snowthrower owners about tackling the street in the future since we never get a plow until it is way too late.

I had to venture into "town" yesterday to pick up my spousal unit's flowers. Doing said venture, I noticed the city folk have a bit more snow. I had to deal with drifting snow before and after work yesterday. 800' of East/West driveway is no fun.
