I have read where certain years of Mustang need a TORX 50 bit to remove the front brake pads. The newer Mustangs use floating pads that simply pull out after the caliper is removed, correct? And there is no TORX bit needed? Thanks!

i never needed a torx...i'm pretty sure it is two 15mm bolts and the calipers just come right off. You will have to compress the piston before re-installing the pads.

I think it's pre 1998 you need the TORX for. I just wanted to make sure because I would need to pick up the right TORX socket. I had the calipers off when I installed the coil springs and thought the pads just floated in the bracket.

hmmm, maybe so, i don't know for sure on the pre98s but i thought they floated.

When you pull out the pads, make sure the caliper bracket is still functional. Not only can the caliper itself fail, so can the floating action of the brackets because the crappy rubber boots do not keep moisture out...hence, they rust up.

Just a word of advice if you did not already know that.

I think those little brake grease packets are only like a dollar at your local auto parts store. They make installing some slightly rusty parts much easier.

Sometimes the brackets get so rusted you are better off replacing them.

I did brakes on my wife's 99 stang recently and I had to replace the rear calipers and caliper brackets....rusted and seized up.

Mine only has 10,900 miles on it and has only seen rain twice, so rust is not a concern. I'm just trying to update the brake rotors, lines, and pads for a little better braking.
