Kurt do you have any experience with the installation of torque converters? Was just wondering what that costs and what else goes into an installation (tunes and such).

Of course if anyone else has any experience let me know.

I installed mine at joels house, not a real hard job but not easy either. Only thing I notice was I needed to get a tune for my lockup functions to be corrected. Since you are near Modular Depot Ken said he would fix this for $200 and tune the car.

Now let me say this, a converter should be one every automatic car list as number 1 thing to do first. It really woke the car up. Mine is a 2400rpm stall and I'm sending it back to get it raise to 3600rpm. With the lockup trans the car drive like stock. Now taking off from a dead stop, you can tell a little because the rpms are up a little, i.e. stock was 1000-1200rpm New converter 1400-1600rpm to take off. Now if I smash it it flashes to 3000 rpm and goes like hell.

Do it and you will be putting a hurt on a lot of V8 Stock stangs from light to light :D

So you are saying we can install this ourselves?

And how do I determine the stall and what brands of converters are best?

yes like a week ago, I have chip already so it was a return. pick your stall about 300-500rpm below your tq peak on the dyno sheet. What is your tq peak rpm?

that is a very good question, I will be wanting to get my car dyno tune'd anyways since the 4.10s and see where I am at.

Do you think Ken would still tune my car after getting the converter, since I have the Diablo instead of SCT.

i would definately get a converter and adjust your shift points and all that

good question, since he is SCT he might not. I have a SCT chip so he told me he would just use the chip if he had to. So I would think he would want you to buy his chip.

It is worth every penny, the tune and converter. Makes I huge difference in taking off. Plus it is less rotating mass. My stock converter was a heavy pig and was 12" the new PI was 9.5" and a lot lighter. That will free up a few HP.

Robert was letting me know that he knows how to deal with Diablo, but its just not his preferred style. I'll have to get ahold of him when or even if I decide to do this, though I really want to.

Oh well I dont know.. it wasnt about the converter that we discussed, it was just getting my car dyno tune'd he would be willing to use the Diablo.

What do the SCT Chips cost?

Guys if I ever plan on SC'ing my car, I should do that before the converter correct?

Yea... Get everything done before playing with the converter.. The converter people want to know everything about your ride when you decide to go with a new converter...

I agree - putting the converter in my Z was the best mod I have done so far. Auto's should come factory with minimum 2500 stall :)

The thing about the 1 free re-stall is they normally are only good for a fixed amount of time.

Consider how fast you really want to go...and what you will need to do it. Then buy the right parts the first time...save a lot of money and time.

The problem is what if the car is your only mode of transportation...

PI did my converter, the first one was done with a SC on the car, so after removing it I lost stall, so I sent it back to have the stall raised to 3600rpm for free. Now I'm stuck there unless I pay for it, but I don't plan on switching, I love it where it is :D
