Hi Guys,
Well I just bought a 67 with a 351 W and I have developed an oil leak. I have been trying to look around the forums about the rear main seal and I wanted some of your opinions. The car leaks oil while running and also while sitting in the garage. The oil puddle is 3-4 inches in diameter after one night in the garage. The attached picture shows the majority of the oil leak. I am not sure but if the rear main seal was leaking would there be oil all over the back of the oil pan. My thinking was the ring gear was spraying the oil everywhere but I wasn't sure. I know the valve covers are not leaking and I think the heads are not leaking. The next questions is I was told when I bought the car it was a 69 block so that means I have a 2 piece main seal unless this was changed when the engine was rebuilt. If I try to replace this can I do it in my garage with some jack stands? I am under the impression I have to remove the tranny and oil pan but can you install the seal while still under the car.
Just to confirm if I pull the oil pan, is there a way to tell if the issue is for sure the rear main seal or if it was the oil pan maybe? I really dont want to put a new oil pan gasket on just to take the pan off again.
Has anyone had similar problems before?
