I'm heading to the yard this weekend to go hunting for various parts for the mustang.

I have a bunch of little things I'm looking for but I was also hoping to find me a 5.0 exploder.

My question is. If I find one with a 5.0 do I want the up/lower and heads or just the upper and lower?

I'm leaning towards this
http://www.on3performance.com/

I'm a big fan of boost.

Our goals (Me and my wife) are a weekend warrior that can be taken out to a car gathering ran down the 1/4 mile and cruise around.

The reason I said 10's before is the turbo kit I'm looking at has already made 10's happen for a few people.

The block will split from what I'm told at 550ish.

They split a lot sooner than 500. Dont let the 5.0 nuts fool you. RPMS kill the Windsor blocks. Stick to around 400 or 450 engine HP and keep the rev's down.

If you do find the Explore head/intake, make sure to have everything prepared for the swap like ARP studs, etc etc.

Hrmmm I know there are a few 450+ wheel power stangs. I don't plan on tossing the heads on right away. I need a cam before that.

they will raise ur compression, if u put a main and valley girdle it will hold but not forever. i sprayed a 250hp shot on my 306 makin 362 hp on motor and its still runnin strong. i also keep it under 7000

The heads will be iron GT40 or GT 40P heads. Better than stockers. If they are in good shape, get them if you can buy them cheap.

They should be able to sell for a couple hundred bucks+ if you are not going to use them for your setup.

Most folks will tell you all the girdles do is hold the pieces together when the block cracks.

+1

And you can still run the stock cam with the GT40 heads with decent results. I have the Steeda 19 in mine with GT40P's. Full mods and dyno runs in my sig link.

grab the heads, upper and lower intake. its a easy 40+ horse gain over stock. easy way to get your car in the low 13's. better yet find the "p" heads...pinch better flow and smaller chambers.

.... but will require special headers (or LT's) and 90° spark plug boots.

i hear you, i know. however on a budget you can make 90 deg boots work most of the time. sleeves if you have to. the power increase is worth it in my opinion.

Not slamming the suggestion, just wanted to make him aware.

+1 on the power. There are a few people running GT40P's to 300 RWHP. (I pulled 262/298 with the stock intake tract and bad plugs/wires).

Andy (Needs a new dyno run)

late 95 to like 1 or 2 of 96 explorers will have the regular GT-40 heads...same as the 93-95 cobras.

3/96 on will be gt-40 P heads.

The early gt-40 motors should have an internal intake. this is the one you want if you use the explorer intake.

the late 96 on intakes (lower doesn't have hole cast for internal egr). upper is the same.

The explorer intakes flow 6cfm more than a tubular gt-40.

I ran 12.10's with Gt-40 irons (ported) and a ported Exploder intake. it was a bad ass street motor. wanted to spray it, but never got the chance.

95-96 exploders had gt40's, anything after that had p's.

the p's will only fit some headers. and you have to make plug wires that fit them(i always like making plugs wires fit the way i want them to.

just put the heads and upper and lower on.

you should grab the 24lbs injectors, and maf off of john

you'll see some good gains just from doing this swap.
you can always find 1.7 RR just for even more of a bump.

IMO, have some mild port work done to the heads and lower, and have a valve job done, arp studs, with good gaskets, and you'll be ready for chads turbo kit with a good fuel system and boost referencing regulator

if your going to turbo it don't bother with anything, maybe a cam. most setups on a stock motor will make the limit in hp in stock form
