Longtubes worth it?

I was just curious if anyone thinks that longtubes would make a noticeable difference over shorties? is it worth the price and hassle?

Noticable difference yes, wasnt too much of a hassle I did energy suspension mounts and bbk long tubes/h pipe at the same time only took a few hours and they made a huge difference and better sound

Yes, you will see better performance results with long tubes vs. shorties. Shorties will not give you numbers much better than stock manifolds in most cases.

just replace your manifolds/h-pipe with the long tubes/short h-pipe at the same time. Shorties work great for a quik budget build though.

I was happy with the swap.. i went from shorties to lt's and am rea happy. it was about a 7 hour swap..

How much hp? 1 3/4" primaries may be a little big.

just note that longtubes are more of a pain in the arse when changing tranny, clutch, etc... get in the way

350 wheel horsepower.. its a 331ci. .. BBK 1 3/4 still have a 2.5 in collector

in my opinion, absolutley not. do they move the power band out further in the rpm range? yes. do they make the car sound different? yes.

i have a 94 gt. trick flow h/c/i. with unequal shorties, bbk h-pipe, 70mm tb, 76mm c&l meter and intake tube. car made 301hp and 332tq to the tire. swapped in a 75mm tb, mac 1 5/8 long tubes, mac pro chamber and threw on a aluminum drive shaft. now the car makes 309hp and 326tq.

now, does that seem like it's worth it to you? not me. all the hassle to get those things on and only gain 8 hp and lose tq? screw that, never again. unless the motor is not in the car yet, and you bolt them on before you drop it in. but if the motor is already in? no way.

so, these guys saying there is a noticable power difference are wrong. there aint no way you're going to notice 8 freakin hp at all. it might be a little different being as you're running a stroker, but is it worth it?

match the primaries properly along with everything else and it could be worth it for the curve. I felt a difference, but mine were jet-hot 2k coated with my hpipe and mufflers. I thought the difference was because of my new bbk LT headers but you never know. I had 1-5/8 on my 306 and it sounded and hauled great (before my blower) without a tune. I never took it to the track or really really got on it but it just felt good throughout. So I don't have numbers. So all in all I can only tell you it felt good and I received many compliments on that and my flowbastard (I like naming things) mufflers. Good luck friend!:usa:

Maybe your 75 MM throttlebody is too much for your combination? Did you get the ECM retuned with these changes? Just some suggestions.


There's some of us old timers that have been doing this for decades, along with the knowledge of what racers have been using, for decades, and the overwhelming concensus is real headers, what younger people refer to as "long tubes", compared to a tubular exhaust manifold (shorties) are what will make the most power and torque, from experience. It's physics.

When I believe something and I find I am the only one in a group of 9 people that believes so I question my resources and do some more research. Hey, we can't know everything. me included.

The sound alone is worth the 8 hours to do it! While you got it apart, it's a cardinal sin to not switch to an afternarket K-member and beef up the tranny at the same time! :p And whatever you do, don't use Percy's gaskets. Use OEM. I blew those Percy's out after 1 week! $50 for junk!

Hell it's worth it just to not fight with the H-pipe everytime it need's to come out for something.

But honestly longtubes come into their own on higher HP engines as far as gain's go.
